Western writing prompts

Westerns are made of distance. Pick a prompt, set the saloon on the edge of nowhere, and write what someone is willing to do to get home.

  1. A retired sheriff inherits a saloon and the previous owner's enemies.
  2. A schoolteacher arrives in town a week before her job exists.
  3. A bounty hunter realises her quarry has been tracking her instead.
  4. The town's only doctor is being asked to certify the wrong man as dead.
  5. A train robbery goes well until the train arrives empty.
  6. A widow turns the family ranch into a sanctuary for outlaws.
  7. Two brothers haven't spoken in twenty years and are both elected sheriff in the same week.
  8. A traveling preacher's congregation starts believing him.
