Fantasy writing prompts

Fantasy is the genre of impossible maps and stubborn heroes. These prompts hand you a hook — a missing heir, a talking sword, a city carved into a mountain — and let your group write the rest.

  1. The last dragon hatches in a children's library and only the librarian can hear it sing.
  2. A cartographer is hired to map a kingdom that rearranges itself every full moon.
  3. The royal taster wakes up immortal and the king is furious.
  4. A blacksmith inherits an apprentice who claims to be the rightful god of fire.
  5. Two rival bakeries discover their starter doughs are ancient warring spirits.
  6. A bard's lute starts playing songs about a war that hasn't happened yet.
  7. The forest hires a lawyer.
  8. An apprentice witch is asked to break a curse on a town that doesn't believe in curses.
